But not in the place where most people might imagine themselves in. The central part of the US that I am in right now seems so withdrawn from the image of hustle and bustle of ‘television America’.
Yes, I am in Lincoln, Nebraska now. I reached here on the 30th of December, which is actually 31st in Malaysia. I couldn’t really access the internet cause the friend I am living with now forgot his wireless password, and his laptop is very often in use. Now I am in one of University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s computer rooms, and the internet connection is amazing!! Websites that would take 5 minutes to load in Malaysia takes only seconds!! Downloading would be a breeze!!
The very first thing that strike me about people here is how friendly they are. The Americans smile and talk nicely to you, help you out, polite, but sometimes it feels so, shall I say, rather fake. I believe that most of the people I meet are nice people, but it makes you wonder which of them are sincere and which aren’t. I generally fear them actually, fearful I might offend them, fearful they might do something that would really give you trouble. I really do hope to know them, and they would be receptive towards me, and in time know the real America behind those faces.
They really drive very slowly here. And even they were driving rather fast they would slowdown their car to an agonizing speed at the sight of a pedestrian on the pavement !! O_O
The food here expectedly is quite bad. They only sell a few vegetables here. Probably it is because of the winter season. But if it is the same thing in Spring or Summer, I would go full fledge Italian.
Now that I am in America, I always thought of my friends who are in America as well. But before my internet connection is up, I would not be able to communicate too often. Please leave me some messages here if you should read this.
Most of all I really miss my family. Although the Malaysian students here are amazingly and mind-boggling friendly and helpful, to have dinner with your family with Mom’s food on the table beats everything. But the future calls, and it is impossible to stay at home forever. I hope my future endeavours would be successful.
